Alness

As part of ongoing environmental improvements in Alness, Class 2/4 at Alness Academy was asked to decorate a wheelie bin in the hope it might encourage pupils to use it for their lunchtime rubbish. Victoria Anderson, Natasha Beauchamp, Claire Brooks, Keith Buchan, Jemma Clark, Conner Dolan, Michael Mackay, Ian MacLeod, Fraser Sinclair, Harry Tolliday, Chris Wells, Kerrie Grey, along with Jeni Birks their art teacher, designed and decorated the bin. It has been placed at the rear entrance to the Heritage Centre garden and is attracting lots of rubbish!

Thanks to all involved at Alness Academy, Highland Council and local volunteers.

Signing of Twinning Agreement

On Friday 27th January 2006 representatives from Alness met with representatives from Lycksele, Sweden using the video conferencing facilities at North Highland College. The purpose of the meeting was so that both towns could simultaneously sign a twinning agreement.

Alister Ferguson, Chairman of the Alness Community Council signed on behalf of Alness and Lilly Bäcklund signed on behalf on Lycksele Kommun.

There has been a developing relationship between the towns for some years and the twinning agreement sets out what they hope can be achieved in the future. Issues common to both towns will be discussed with a view to sharing knowledge, experience and ideas of how they can be dealt with. Environmental issues, social issues, small town development, funding and tourism are topics which the towns have discussed and hope to develop.

Communication between groups of citizens between the towns will be encouraged initially through video conference meetings. In future it is hoped to establish partnership projects and to arrange exchange visits.

If you would like to know more about Lycksele and to become involved in the twinning project, please contact Kate Cowie, Small Town Networks Project Officer, through the Heritage Centre, 102 High Street, Alness, Tel. 01349 863005 or by email at kate.cowie@smalltownnetworks.com .
